Who's Spartacus?

Started by: dostaf (inactive)

Anyone know? Just out of interest.

The real Spartacus was a freeborn provincial from Thrace, who may have served as an auxiliary in the Roman army in Macedonia. He deserted the army, was outlawed, captured, sold into slavery, and trained at the gladiatorial school of Batiatus in Capua.

Well at least no one pointed any fingers!
However, there are a load of Roman chariots going round the town centre. There's at least CCCLXXVIII of em. All on't wrong side of the road.

I believe the police helicopter has been hovering over Whelley area looking for a legion

Sorry if I’m too late with this. I haven’t read the other fourteen responses.

The original Spartacus who died c.71 BC, was a Thracian slave and gladiator. He led a revolt against Rome in 73, but was eventually defeated by Crassus in 71 and crucified.

No, it wasn’t in my head. I got it in a flash from Oxford-2003.

jerry, and all other posters, this was intended as a daft line of thought.

I posted it after mentioning Spartacus on another thread. I actually hoped that the world and his wife would have replied with the same admission. "I'm Spartacus"

Or even "I'm Brian and so's my wife"

Looking back, it could appear that one thread was set up to ridicule another.

This was certainly not the intention. Being relatively new at this game, I am now more wiser.

Simultaneous postings can obviously go out of sync. I sincerely hope no offence was caused to anyone.

Having said that I am still no wiser as to who the bugger is

There is some information about the historical figure, Spartacus, on wikipedia.

The photograph of his statue made me giggle immaturely - they should leaf him alone!

I haven't taken any offence, Dostaf.

Don't say that keno. He's been hanging around for ages and is certainly not match fit. He's good at running away from the posts, but reluctant to put one between the sticks. This comes from a previous traumatic experience.

I heard Dave Spikey ( Phoenix Nights ) telling a story once...everyone knows Kirk Douglas has a son Michael but he also has another son John (? ) Douglas who is a famous stand-up comedian in the USA.
John was doing a show in London and American humour being what it is, he was dying the death on stage ! Eventually, in frustration at the lack of response to his jokes, he jumped up and shouted , "Do you know who I am ? I'm Kirk Douglas's son!
All went quiet, then a voice from the back of the theatre shouted, "No, I'm Kirk Douglas's son! " The another stood to his feet, "No, I'm Kirk Douglas's son!"
By the time half the audience were stood up and shouting at him, the poor American had to be led from the stage.
BRITISH wit at it's best.
